There are many advantages to living in Hawaii, especially for an old man. But there are some disadvantages, too, and the arrival of Autumn brings one strongly to mind. There really is no Autumn here, no differentiation between summer and fall. Of course, the days draw shorter but not in the dramatic way they do on the Mainland.
The trees do not change color and few lose their leaves, the flowers remain the same year-round. The fun of Halloween and the joy of Thanksgiving are weaker here for lack of the seasonal signals.
It’s enough to make a man melancholy.
